Everyone has their favorites of this and that. In the last year I have worked on 6 diffferent blogs powered by WordPress. These are the top plug-ins that I recommend.

WPtouch Theme {view site}
Great plugin that formats your site with a mobile theme for the Apple iPhone / iPod touch, Google Android and other touch-based smartphones.

Custom Login Page {view site}
Allows for the admin login page to be customized to reflect the overall branding of the site. This speaks loudly when logging into the admin panel.

Google Analyticator {view site}
Adds the necessary JavaScript code to enable Google’s Analytics, a powerful tool that gives you rich insights into your website traffic and marketing effectiveness. Powerful, flexible and easy-to-use features let you see and analyze your traffic data in an entirely new way.

WP-Cumulus {view site}
Allows you to display your site’s tags, categories or both using a Flash movie that rotates them in 3D. It works just like a regular tags cloud, but is more visually exciting for you visitor’s.

Sociable {view site}
Great way to automatically add links at the footer of your posts, pages and RSS feed that allows visitors to share on your favorite social networking sites.

I found the winter 2009 compassion magazine and used that as my inspiration for the breakfast collateral. Thankfully I was able to provide an image of each of the kids sponsered by Club 56 the fifth & sixth grade ministry at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church.

This is the product of an inspiration I received from a buddy of mine that had created a monthly twitter newsletter for his church. To continue in the student ministries desire of being faithful stewards of resources this calendar covers January – May with Jan-Mar on the front side and Apr-May on the back side.

I thought it was a perfect concept for the high school ministry as many of the students are on twitter. You can follow them at hashtag #209.

How much do we print weekly?
How many go unused?
How much paper is being thrown away each week?

opendoor is “a community walking in the Way of Jesus for the good fo the world.” One of those ways is being faithful stewards with its resources. After realizing that each week, multiple bulletins were being left behind either untouched because we printed more than needed or left because it wasn’t usefully enough to take home after the gatherings. Jer and I percolated the idea of stopping the printing of the weekly bulletin and focusing more on printing what we need instead of printing a bulletin because that’s just what we hand you when you walk in the door. We are definitely not about doing something “because that’s just what we do”.

Shortly after this change we started printing custom notes pages for each night and we discovered that again we were throwing away paper that weren’t even touched. Currently we are printing notes pages that are used for the whole series with much less waste.

All opendoor communications are conveyed through

upfront time at the gatherings

detailed info online with documents available for download

weekly e-mails

For the first time visitors, we have designed a simple card that just gets printed as often as we need to restock.

By reducing print we have also been able to focus information about last minute changes.

Recently moved the members from the opendoor facebook group to the opendoor facebook pages. We have already seen a much higher interaction with members commenting and “liking” the updates. The next project is to test out Twitter for opendoor.

So often we are driven to be unique and to stand out from the rest. Sometimes the money isn’t there and sometimes it is present. Many organizations strive to be the next big thing or at least provide the next big thing. I recently read an article about how in the economic times that we are facing it is not wise to always strive to be unique and create from scratch. There is an explosion of Web 2.0 technology that we should be focusing on how to harness and utilize these tools to benefit the goal of marketing.

One huge marketing and tool found on the web now is video. For the average non-profit or small business, it would be wise to partner with branded video players like, Vimeo than to spend time and resources on developing or purchasing a video player to play video content. A major reason to partner with them is because they have already worked out many of the plug and play bugs and functions. Even with purchased video media players the setup of, storage of, and rendering of the movie files would have to be managed and that often gets missed. Even when it comes to my anablepomedia flash site. Looking back on the amount of time that went into creating a flash video player, it took a lot of time. Personally I plowed through trying to learn how to create custom video players through flash so that I could evaluate it and for a school project.

A major buzzword of the web is social networks! There are companies that provide a closed “social network” to ensure privacy and create a “close network”. Why go through the trouble of creating a individual social network when there are tools like facebook that already have a large network of people. The great thing about facebook is that you can promote networking of people inside & outside of your own organization/company. You can create a group (private or public) to represent your organization and network within that group. Events for that group can be created, the group page can be used as bulletin board postings, etc…

Just about every organization large or small has a calendar. There are many services that provide online calendars for a monthly or yearly fee. Google has a calendar that is free and can be applied to many various web applications. It also allows multiple users to administrate the calendar’s events. Calendar’s can be public to everyone or be private for a select group/organization.

The key with any white-label technology is to find out what it offer’s, any limitation’s, etc… As with anything there are pluses and minuses. Then it’s a matter of creating and utilizing the tools for the best interests and marketability of your organization/company. For the majority of non-profits and small businesses to create their own brand of video players or social networks will not result in the best bang for the buck. There are however circumstances when it would be best to branch from facebook into a low cost alternative social networking like Ning. One must consider the trade off of losing the existing community found through YouTube, Vimeo, facebook to creating one’s own brand.

Adult ministries at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church wanted a eye catching design for their seasonal catalog of all events & classes offered. This is a simple design of using a vibrant image of fall colored leaves and organizing the info into two columns on each page.
