The final exercise in my After Effects Basic class for the Multimedia Design Certificate was to create a unique music video. To thank my wife and kids for the time spent to work on this project I selected “Dinosaur Song” by Johnny Cash. It was a fun short project in After Effects.

This was a fun project to keep simple all of the way. There were times that I wanted to do so much more but it did not represent the couple well. So I kept it simple, yet with some class that After Effects can deliver.

How well do we reflect on those who have gone before us? How well do we teach future generations?

Today my wife and I showed our kids (3 1/2 & 2) the tribute video that I created for my father that passed away 2 months before our first child was born. He never got to meet any of his grandkids but my wife and I have vowed for our kids to know who their papa was. So we showed them the video. It brought tears to me as I watched moments of my childhood with my father and how special those moments were. I watched my kids as they were recognizing their granma, my brother, myself and as the video progressed they started pointing out more of the pictures with papa. In the photos of him with non-family members, they inquired who he was with and why? They were curious to what he was doing? Silly papa wearing that wig, etc…

As I watched them interact with this video, I was in awe of how these photos brought him more to life for them since they never got to meet him. They understand that he lives in Heaven with Jesus.

I was also reminded of how precious each moment is with the ones we love. How do we love one another? How well do we love our neighbor? We are given a blessing to walk in the name of Jesus each day. It is my hope that I can continue to reflect Jesus in the lives of my children, to my wife, and my community.

Simple steps to organize digital photos before you don't know when, where and who is in the photo.

Photos are a huge blessing and curse. We have moved from a age of stacks of photos stuff in shoe boxes, to an age of photos scattered around our computer’s hard drive. I have done several slide shows and the main pain always comes down to 1) When was the photo taken? 2) Who is in the photo? 3) Where was the photo taken?

Some tips from my experience to help in organizing digital photos and scanned photos so that you don’t have multiple DSC0120, IMG5612, etc…

{STEPS}

Create a NEW folder called YEAR. (i.e. “2009″)

Create a NEW folder called TEMP within YEAR (i.e. “2009″ > “TEMP”

Whenever you bring pictures off your camera, load them into your TEMP folder!

Go through and delete bad, close to duplicates, etc…

Using a program like Adobe Bridge, Google’s Picassa. Do a batch rename of all you files to the date created as YEARMONTHDATE (i.e. 20090609_001.jpg, 20090609_002.jpg or 20090609_robert heather in backyard.jpg, 20090609_grace abraham in the pool.jpg

Tag each of your photos with keywords (i.e. name, place, etc…) Keywords can be whatever you want. The key is to use words that will help you in being able to do a search for photos later using the keywords assigned to each of the photos.

Edit the photos as needed (i.e. crop, lighten, darken, etc…)

Now you can move these photos to the “YEAR” folder or subfolder (i.e. “2009 > “01-03_Jan_Mar”, “2009 > “04-06_Apr_Jun”, or however you want to name you subfolders.)

The overall key is to first place the photos in a general TEMP folder so that you know these photos have not been looked through. They need to be renamed, tagged with keywords, edited, etc… Once they are in the overarching YEAR folder, you know that these are the photos you wanted to keep and importantly to find quickly and view the photos you were looking for.

Please comment if you have questions or other digital photo organization tips to share.
